If you’ve spent any time in the western industry, you’ve undoubtedly heard the name John Growney. With over a half-century of rodeo expertise under his belt, John has earned his place in the history books—whether through his masterfully produced rodeos or his unforgettable million-dollar smile.
John’s rodeo journey began as a high schooler climbing aboard steers, which soon led to a bull riding career. But his impact on the sport didn’t stop there. In 1977, alongside his brother Mike and Don Kish, John acquired RSC Rodeo Co. and transformed it into the legendary Growney Brothers Rodeo Company. In 1984, they purchased Red Rock, a bull that became a rodeo legend in his own right, retiring after the 1987 National Finals Rodeo. Never one to shy away from bold ideas, John masterminded the iconic 1988 Champions Challenge, pitting Red Rock against 1987 world champion bull rider Lane Frost—a matchup that made rodeo history and won the hearts of fans everywhere.
John’s unique blend of rodeo experience, skill in raising top-tier animal athletes, and knack for delivering unforgettable shows has set a new standard for rodeo productions nationwide. Today, Legacy Pro Rodeo is fortunate to benefit from John’s deep well of knowledge, ensuring the tradition of excellence continues.
